永磁材料是發現和使用都最早的一類磁性材料。我國最早發明的指南器(稱為司南)便是利用永磁鐵氧體中的磁鐵礦制成的?，F在的永磁材料不但種類很多，而且用途也十分廣泛。

常用的永磁材料主要具有4種磁特性：

(1)高的最大磁能積。最大磁能積[符號為(BH)m]是永磁材料單位體積存儲和可利用的最大磁能量密度的量度；

(2)高的矯頑(磁)力。矯頑力[符號為(H)c]是永磁材料抵抗磁的和非磁的干擾而保持其永磁性的量度；

(3)高的剩餘磁通密度(符號為Br)和高的剩餘磁化強度(符號為Mr)。它們是具有空氣隙的永磁材料的氣隙中磁場強度的量度；

(4)高的穩定性，即對外加干擾磁場和溫度、震動等環境因素變化的高穩定性。當前常用的重要永磁材料主要有：(1)稀土永磁材料，這是當前最大磁能積最高的一大類永磁材料，為稀土族元素和鐵族元素為主要成分的金屬互化物(又稱金屬間化合物)。

(3)鐵氧體永磁材料。這是以Fe2O3為主要組元的復合氧化物強磁材料(狹義)和磁有序材料如反鐵磁材料(廣義)。其特點是電阻率高，特別有利于在高頻和微波應用。如鋇鐵氧體(BaFe12O19)和鍶鐵氧體(SrFe12O19)等都有很多應用。
